TORONTO -- Chad Owens on-again, off-again season is off again. Toronto head coach Scott Milanovich doesnt expect the speedy receiver/kick-returner to dress Monday against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Owens played in the Argonauts 41-27 road loss to Edmonton on Sunday after missing four games with a foot ailment but left in the fourth quarter with a leg injury following a hard hit from Eskimos defensive back Aaron Grymes. Milanovich said during a conference call Tuesday an MRI found no serious damage to Owens knee. There remains swelling in the joint and thigh that Milanovich figures will sideline Owens, the CFLs outstanding player in 2012, for the scheduled opener at new Tim Hortons Field. "Hell more than likely be out this week," Milanovich said. "Theres a little swelling around his knee where he took the hit but nothing else thats going to keep him out for a very long time." The Argos (3-6) have lost two straight but are atop the East Division, four points ahead of Hamilton (1-6), the Ottawa Redblacks (1-7) and Montreal Alouettes (1-7). Owens, 32, was the CFLs leading receiver when he hurt his foot in a 34-15 home loss to Calgary on July 15. He had seven catches for 92 yards and a TD against Edmonton before being hurt. The loss of Owens is a blow to Torontos pass-oriented offence (league-high 289.1 yards per game). Owens has 35 catches for 431 yards and two TDs and is averaging a league-high 107.8 yards receiving per game. Hes also the Argos top punt returner (17.3-yard average, one TD). Fortunately, Torontos walking wounded are returning. Receiver Jason Barnes is back after missing time with a knee injury and Milanovich is hopeful safety Matt Black (arm) and running back Steve Slaton (stinger) will play Monday. He also expects to know later this week if veteran slotback Andre Durie (clavicle) can go against Hamilton. "With Andre, were still waiting to get clearance and see how he performs in practice," Milanovich said. "Im hoping to know more Thursday, the first day we practise but Andres very close." Yet questions exist whether Mondays game will take place. Tim Hortons Field was due to open June 30 but construction delays forced the Ticats to play their first three home games at McMaster University. If Tim Hortons Field isnt ready in time, the contingency plans are to play the next day either at the Hamilton facility or Torontos Rogers Centre. But Ticats owner Bob Young said Monday the club is determined to play the contest Monday, as scheduled. "Its something I was trying to find an answer to (Monday) and I cant say I was given a definitive answer but I was encouraged to believe the game will take place Monday and so thats how were approaching it, Milanovich said. "Weve set up our practise schedule that way and if that changes that will be unfortunate but right now were going to assume were playing Monday." On Tuesday, Toronto released veteran cornerback Dwight Anderson, running back Jeremiah Johnson and receiver Terrell Sinkfield. The Argos acquired Anderson, 33, from the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 7 and the eight-year veteran had 27 tackles, three sacks and two tackles in seven games. But Milanovich said the moves werent a sign the Argos blame the trio for their last two losses. "Its getting to that time of the year when the NFL gets to the cutdown point," Milanovich said. "Theyre not the reason why weve lost the last two games. "We do want to make some adjustments to our roster in the hopes we can get some more production at those positions and to do that youve got to make some space." Anderson helped Saskatchewan win the Grey Cup last season and Toronto was looking to the five-foot-11, 188-pound veteran to bring experience and veteran savvy to a young defence that returned just four starters from 2013. The move also reunited the colourful Anderson, regarded as the CFLs top trash talker, with Milanovich, defensive co-ordinator Tim Burke and Argos GM Jim Barker. Milanovich and Burke were assistant coaches with Montreal when Anderson was there while Barker was in Calgarys front office in 2008 when Anderson was a Stampeder. "I think our DBs are playing well and progressing and there are a couple still on our roster that wed like to get a look at as well as the distinct possibility well have another one coming in here shortly," Milanovich said. "We just had to make a move and today it was Dwights turn." Sinkfield joined Toronto in March as a free agent and in five games had seven catches for 90 yards and a TD. He also had one rushing attempt for six yards, 11 kickoff returns for 240 yards and a punt return for nine yards. Johnson, another free-agent signee, ran for 110 yards on 21 carries in five games and also added 15 catches for 112 yards with one touchdown. On Tuesday, the CFL announced veteran slotback Weston Dressler had cleared NFL waivers and was an unrestricted free agent. Dressler, 29, spent six seasons with Saskatchewan before being released in January and signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, who released him Monday. There are reportedly five teams interested in Dressler, the CFLs top rookie in 08 and a two-time league all-star, but it doesnt seem Toronto is one of them. Milanovich said the Argos hadnt discussed Dresslers availability but expected that to happen. "Certainly hes a very talented player." Milanovich said. "Its not something at this point that weve sat down and made a conscious effort about but Im sure it will be discussed (Tuesday night) at some point." The Jets parted ways with wide receiver Santonio Holmes on Monday, cutting the talented but injury-plagued playmaker after four seasons. The move, which had been expected, saves the Jets $8.25 million, which Holmes was due to make as his base salary this season. He was also scheduled to have a $10.75 million cap number, a lofty total for a one-time Super Bowl MVP who has struggled with injuries and inconsistency the last two seasons. The Jets also released cornerback Antonio Cromartie on Sunday, clearing $17.75 million of salary cap space before the NFLs free agency period starts Tuesday. New York could also save another $8.3 million if they cut quarterback Mark Sanchez, who missed last season with a shoulder injury. Holmes, who turned 30 last Monday, had 23 catches -- the second-lowest total of his career -- for 456 yards and a touchdown in 11 games last season. He missed five games midway through the season with a hamstring injury. Holmes played in just four games in 2012 and was sidelined for several months after suffering a career-threatening foot injury. In December, Holmes said he would be willing to restructure his contract to remain a member of the Jets, adding that how much of a pay cut hed be asked to take probably wouldnt play into his decision to want to stay. "I appreciate Tones contributions over the last four seasons," coach Rex Ryan said in a statement. "Ive always admired his knack for making the clutch play. Hes a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line. I wish him nothing but the best." Holmes signed a five-year, $45 million deal before the 2011 season after a solid first year with the Jets, who acquired him from Pittsburgh for a fifth-round draft pick. He agreed to restructure his conttract in March 2012, when he took a $3.dddddddddddd5 million cut to his scheduled base salary of $11 million for last season. Holmes was a controversial figure at times during his tenure with the Jets, butting heads with Sanchez and the teams offensive linemen during the 2011 season. In the season finale at Miami, he got into an argument with offensive tackle Wayne Hunter in the huddle and was benched for the rest of the game. The mercurial wide receiver also had a contentious relationship with the media, keeping his answers short during most group interviews. He inadvertently made headlines last season when he called Carolinas secondary the Panthers defences "weakest link" while trying to credit the unit -- but providing bulletin board for an opponent that went out and beat the Jets 30-20. Holmes was a first-round draft pick by the Steelers out of Ohio State in 2006 and was selected the Super Bowl MVP in his third season after he caught a 6-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger with 35 seconds left to lead Pittsburgh past Arizona. He had his best statistical performance the following season with 79 catches for 1,248 yards and five touchdowns. But Holmes was traded to the Jets the following off-season after the Steelers tired of his numerous legal troubles. Holmes was suspended for his first four games with the Jets for violating the NFLs substance abuse policy, but quickly became one of the teams primary playmakers when he returned. He played a key role in three straight wins with big catches late in games, prompting Ryan to label those types of clutch moments as "Tone Time." He also helped lead the Jets to their second straight AFC title game appearance, in which they lost to Holmes former team. Holmes has 381 career catches for 5,963 yards and 36 touchdowns in eight NFL seasons.
