TEMPE, Ariz. - After their worst performance of the season, the Arizona Cardinals lead in the NFC West is down to a precarious one game over surging Seattle.Drew Stanton and the Cardinals offence barely have a pulse. The usually stout defence was riddled for 500 yards in Arizonas 29-18 loss at Atlanta on Sunday, a game that was not nearly as close as the final score indicated. Now the road only gets rougher.Up next are the Kansas City Chiefs, who are 7-5 and in the thick of the fight for at least an AFC wild card berth. At least the game is at home, where the Cardinals are 6-0 this season and 12-2 since coach Bruce Arians took over a year ago.Arians said on Monday that the pratfall in Atlanta, Arizonas second straight loss after a six-game winning streak, was perplexing given the great week of practice the team had put in after losing at Seattle. It was an outstanding week of preparation, he said. But you cant play in the National Football League without passion and energy, and we brought none of the above to that game. Its our first time in a long time. I think that some guys fell into the trap that the Falcons werent any good. Thats a bad trap to fall into.Injuries still are mounting in the desert.Safety Tyrann Mathieu fractured his left thumb in Sundays game and doctors were determining how to treat it, Arians said.Best case scenario is put it in a cast and he can play, Arians said. Worst case is put a pin in it and out for three weeks.Running back Andre Ellington, already bothered by foot and hip injuries, got a hip pointer (on the other hip) Sunday and wont practice on Wednesday, Arians said.Right guard Paul Fanaika and left tackle Jared Veldheer have ankle sprains and their prospects for next Sunday are uncertain. But there is some good news on the injury front. After missing two games with a bruised knee, eight-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald should practice Wednesday, Arians said. The team also gets outside linebacker Matt Shaughnessy back. Shaughnessy had been on the injured but eligible to return list for the last eight games.Arians said he wouldnt yell at the players in their Monday meeting.Im just honest, he said. When you stink, you stink. You point out how you stunk and get it corrected.Besides, he said, the tape is so bad it speaks for itself.Drew Stanton dropped to 3-3 as a starter, 1-2 since Carson Palmer went down with a season-ending knee injury. The offence went more than 11 quarters, 28 consecutive possessions, without scoring a touchdown before it finally got one late against the Falcons.Cornerback Patrick Peterson acknowledged that the defence has to step up with Palmer out, something that certainly didnt happen in Atlanta. We still have all the confidence in the world in Drew but were still playing with a backup quarterback, Peterson said. That changes the dynamics of everything.Tight end John Carlson defended his quarterback. Its certainly not Drews fault, Carlson said. Every individual on the offensive side of the ball needs to play better, needs to execute better.Arians said Stanton was really, really hot and cold against the Falcons, when he threw two interceptions.Threw the ball extremely well outside and down the field, and then overthrew Jaron (Brown) six inches too high on the interception, Arians said. The other (interception) he went through his progressions and then just dumped one over Michaels (Floyd) head. Those are critical errors, and he has not made those earlier in the season, something thats easily corrected.Kansas City is coming off a one-sided home loss to Denver and is fighting for its playoff life. The Chiefs, Arians said, will not be an easy foe for an Arizona team that has to stop its slide or see a remarkably successful season slip away.Peterson, who talked last week about how he wanted to go against Julio Jones, was torched by the Atlanta receiver, who caught 10 passes for a career-high 189 yards. He said he always talks that way about an opponents best receiver and any talk about him calling out Jones is baloney. The Cardinals arent in the position to call out anybody.Weve got to get back to what got us here, Peterson said.NOTES: The Cardinals released linebacker Desmond Bishop and elevated guard-centre Anthony Steen from the practice squad.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFLJason Kidd College Jersey . Kings. Jonathan Quick turned aside each and every one of them and so many more - 32 in all - as he and the Kings nudged the Rangers to the brink of elimination on a sticky Monday night in Manhattan. “He was obviously the best player on the ice tonight,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said glumly afterward. Asked what went wrong, Vigneault deferred to Quick. “We couldnt score,” he said. This was a flashback to the remarkable Quick of two years earlier, the Quick who rung up three shutouts and a .946 save percentage in a near-flawless march to the Kings first Stanley Cup. The now 28-year-old hadnt been nearly as dominant this time around. He entered Game 3 with a mild .906 save percentage while sprinkling in the usual assortment of game-changing stops, including a breakaway save on Carl Hagelin in the dying moments of regulation in Game 1. “I think that was his best game of the playoffs,” Drew Doughty said of Quick in a visitors dressing room that remained cool and business-like, despite the Cup drawing near. “He played fantastic for us tonight. He made some big saves, saves he had no business making.” Most memorable and crowd-deafening among them was a heroic stop on Mats Zuccarello in the opening period, one that saw the Kings netminder employ every last ounce of will to keep the puck from crossing the line – the net appeared open – his paddle the ultimate saving grace. Some on thhe L.ddddddddddddA. bench, including captain Dustin Brown, thought Zuccarello simply missed the gaping cage only to discover later on replay that it was Quick who kept it out. “Hes the best in the world,” said Jarret Stoll. “Hes going to come up with those saves sometimes, it doesnt surprise us.” His brilliance only continued thereafter. Amid the aforementioned barrage of shots in a second period plagued with penalties – L.A. was a perfect on six penalty kills – Quick calmly brushed aside Rick Nashs hard charge to the net before swatting Derick Brassards attempt away for another glowing stick save. Brown, also a teammate of Quick with the American squad internationally, is past being surprised by such theatrics in the crease. “The best example is playing at the Olympics and seeing other guys react to it and Im just sitting there because Ive played with him long enough and hes made enough of those saves you kind of expect him to do it,” said Brown. Born in nearby Connecticut and a Rangers fan growing up – the 90-minute drive kept him from attending many games – Quick had never played an NHL game in the historic Mecca of New York hockey, though he did take to the ice briefly as a 12-year-old in one rare visit. This performance will surely eclipse such a memory. Cloaked in a hoodie and sweats afterward, Quick downplayed any added meaning to his debut on the hallowed ice of MSG. “It meant it was a playoff hockey game,” he said slyly. “We were trying to win a hockey game.” One more and the taste will be a whole lot sweeter.
