NEWARK, N.J. - The win was a treat for Devils rookie goalie Keith Kinkaid. Getting his first career shutout would have made it even sweeter.Kinkaid came close, surrendering a lone goal with 1:29 remaining as New Jersey beat the Florida Panthers 3-1 on Saturday night.I cant lie. It was in the back of my mind, Kinkaid said. I tried not to think about it too much. It wasnt the end of the world.Just the end of a shutout bid for a rookie backup who improved to 2-3-3 in his first start since Jan. 9.It was upsetting to go 58 1/2 minutes without giving up a goal (and then losing the shutout bid), Kinkaid said. Hopefully, there will be plenty more games in my future, and well get it done.Kinkaid stopped 26 shots while Mike Cammalleri and Steve Bernier each had a goal and an assist. Jaromir Jagr also scored as the Devils won for the sixth time in 10 games (6-2-2).Kinkaid got the start as Cory Schneider rested after facing a season-high 43 shots in the Devils 2-1 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Friday.Hes played well everytime hes been in there, Devils general manager and co-coach Lou Lamoriello said. Too bad we couldnt get the shutout for him. Ive said all along that our goaltending is something we feel very good about.Kinkaid, an undrafted free agent, was solid as the Devils beat the Panthers at home for the fifth straight time.Kinkaid lost the shutout on a drive by Brandon Pirri. It was a costly loss for the Panthers who hoped to gain ground in the chase for a playoff spot. Florida started the day six points behind the New York Rangers who held the second and final wild-card position in the Eastern Conference. While the Panthers lost for the sixth time in the last seven games, the Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1.The Panthers play the Rangers on Monday night at Madison Square Garden. Were fighting to catch the Rangers and we have them next, Panthers forward Shawn Thornton said. Theyre a team ahead of us. Its going to be hard to catch them this way.Jagr and Cammalleri scored in a span of just under 5 minutes as the Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period.Jagr opened the scoring at 9:40 with his 10th goal of the season, the 715th of his career. Jagr is now only two goals behind Phil Esposito, fifth on the all-time list.Set up by passes from Dainius Zubrus and Cammalleri, Jagr roofed a shot from the slot over Roberto Luongos left shoulder.Cammalleri connected for a power-play tally with 5:13 remaining in the period to give New Jersey the two-goal advantage. The goal was set up by a beautiful between-the-legs backhand pass from Bernier to Cammalleri who got his team-leading 16th score.Kinkaid made those goals stand up.The Panthers controlled the scoreless second period but could not put a puck past Kinkaid. Florida outshot New Jersey 12-1 with the lone Devils shot coming from Bernier as time expired. The Panthers had several good opportunities with some of their best coming in the on the power play with Aleksander Barkov and Jonathan Huberdeau swiping at a loose puck in the crease before Kinkaid covered up.It was more of the same in third as the Devils concentrated on defending their zone while letting the Panthers carry the play.Kinkaid made a big pad save on Huberdeaus slapper from the left circle with 4 minutes left. The Panthers pulled Luongo for an extra attacker in final 3 minutes. Then Bernier iced the game with an empty netter with 2:32 to go, his fifth goal in the last six games. The only remaining suspense was the shutout, and that vanished on Pirris goal.We are not going to score this way, Pirri said. Its not the way were built. We have to score some ugly ones. Were an ugly team and have to start scoring ugly goals. Scoring one goal just is not good enough. Its not going to get any easier from here.NOTES: The Panthers started a three-games-in-four-nights swing through the New York area. Wholesale Miami Jerseys .Y. -- When the New York Islanders lead was cut in half in the opening minute of the third period, the sense of impending doom began wafting through Nassau Coliseum.TORONTO – Dave Bolland did not hesitate when asked who would win on Friday. "Canada," Bolland said with a smile. "Is that a question?" One day earlier, though, fellow Toronto Maple Leafs centre Nazem Kadri wasnt so sure his home and native land could pull off the win against the United States in the semi-finals of the Olympic hockey tournament. "I want to say Canada, but to be honest with you, the U.S. looks better," Kadri, a native of London, Ont., said. "We dont know if Naz is Canadian or American," Bolland, from Mimico, Ont., said with a chuckle. "We dont know what he is or who hes cheering for. He could be cheering for the Belarusians." Roommate Turmoil The North American rivalry has many fault lines throughout the Leafs dressing room even though a vast majority of the players – 20 in total – are Canadian. The issue: two of the key players on Team USA are also two-thirds of Torontos top line: Phil Kessel and James van Riemsdyk. The man who centres that line in the NHL, Reginas Tyler Bozak, may be the Leaf who is most torn. After all, Bozak is close friends with Kessel and actually lives with the Leafs leading scorer. "Thats a tough question for me to answer," Bozak admitted when asked where his loyalties lie. "Ive got my two wingers on the U.S. and Im Canadian so I guess Im cheering for both. I just hope Phil and JVR play really well and maybe Canada wins. I dont know. "Its going to be an exciting game to watch, for sure. I really cant make any predictions. I dont know. The U.S. has been playing great. Canadas kind of snuck by with a few wins, buut every games different and it should be a fun one to watch.dddddddddddd" Another set of roommates are also at odds over the game and are actually putting their money where their mouthes are. Defencemen Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner, from Vancouver and Minnetonka, MN respectively, have placed a friendly wager on the game. "I cant tell you what it is," Rielly said. "Hes overconfident. I think Team Canada will be fine." Most Leafs, however, were trying to take the diplomatic approach with head coach and Sudbury, Ont. native Randy Carlyle, acknowledging the semi-final showdown "was pulling your heart strings in different directions." The Diplomatic Approach "We hope and wish our players all the luck in the world as far as an organization," said Carlyle, "but I am Canadian." "I hope that Phil and JVR do well," said captain Dion Phaneuf, who hails from Edmonton and was invited to Hockey Canadas orientation camp in the summer, "so Im in the middle, thats for sure. Any time you have teammates competing, you want them to do well, but Im Canadian and I have lots of respect for Hockey Canada." What everyone can agree on is that Kessel and van Riemsdyk are having a much better Sochi experience than Nikolai Kulemin, who was the other Leaf taking part in the Winter Games. "Nobody asks questions about how youre going to feel about Nikolai Kulemin coming back and thats a tough one," said Carlyle. "Host country and the way their tournament unravelled, hes part of our hockey club and weve got to find a way to build him back up and get him going again."
