Panama City, Panama (SportsNetwork.com) - Scott Parel carded a 5-under 65 on Thursday and he grabbed a 1-stroke lead after one round of the season-opening Panama Claro Championship. Parel, the 2013 Air Capital Classic winner, has played the weekend at this event the last three years, but his best finish was a tie for 39th in 2013. Jeff Gove, a three-time Web.com Tour winner, is one stroke off the lead at minus-4 at Club de Golf de Panama. Mathew Goggin opened with a 3-under 67. He was joined in third place by Peter Tomasulo, Hao Tong Li, Harold Varner III and T.J. Vogel. Joel Dahmen and Shane Bertsch are among 15 players tied for eighth at minus-2. He rolled in his fifth birdie of the day at the 17th and capped a bogey-free round with a par at the last. I couldnt ask for much more than that. Out here, you know that if you can shoot under par, youre going to be right there, said Parel, who didnt turn pro until he was 31-years-old. I hit a lot of good shots and a couple of not- so-good ones that I got good breaks on, which you have to do to go around here with any bogeys. Gove was in the first group out and he ran off eight straight pars to start his round. He got on the board with a birdie at the ninth, and he made it two in a row as he also birdied No. 10. The 2005 Oregon Classic winner cruised to six consecutive pars from the 11th. Gove birdied the par-3 17th and followed with another birdie at the last to post 4-under. It was pretty steady. I was a little frustrated that I didnt get off to a better start because we were out there without any wind. Par is a good score out here and you dont feel like youre losing ground, Gove said. Arrieta said pitching at Wrigley Field has become a special experience for him dating to his Cubs debut last season, also was against the Cardinals. Arrieta walked two and threw 82 pitches. The Cardinals put five runners on base through the first three innings. "Command of my sinker down in the zone was working really good, establishing the curveball early in the game," he said. "The more you do that with secondary stuff, the less they can eliminate certain pitches later in the game. Thats kind of what we had going for us." Chicagos bullpen combined for three-hit relief, finishing a seven-hitter. Brian Schlitter (1-0) got two outs for the win, and Hector Rondon worked around a pair of leadoff singles in the ninth for his third save. Junior Lake and Anthony Rizzo homered for the Cubs, who hadnt won three straight a series sweep at San Francisco last July 26-28. He also doubled on a 3-for-3 afternoon. "Its just frustrating, really," Wacha said. "I served one up there, and they go up two runs. You just cant afford that in that situation." "Its just about getting the wins. Today we got the win. The last few days weve gotten a win. Its just about staying with it, keep battling." NOTES: Cardinals LHP Jaime Garcia (shoulder) was scheduled to make a minor league injury rehabilitation start Saturday at Double A-Springfield. ... With the Cardinals struggling offensively, Matheny has tried several lineup combinations. Thats left some players -- especially OF Peter Bourjos and 2B Mark Ellis -- frustrated because of unpredictable playing time. "The message we continue to give them is: keep pushing," Matheny said. "We need each of you guys to be at the top of your game in order to be as good as we can be and youre gonna get your opportunity."
