Fridays action from Brazil concludes with Ecuador and Honduras both looking for their first win at the 2014 World Cup. Listen to Ecuador vs. Honduras LIVE at 6pm et/3pm pt on TSN Radio 1050 Toronto and TEAM 1410 Vancouver. Ecuador and Honduras will both be aiming to bounce back after suffering defeats in their respective World Cup openers in Group E play at the Arena da Baixada on Friday. Both sides enter the match without a point, but the two teams arrived at that destination in very different ways. Ecuadors 2-1 defeat to Switzerland came on a stoppage-time winner from Swiss substitute Haris Seferovic, while Honduras was hammered 3-0 by France and had Wilson Palacios sent off in the first half. There is no room for error for either team in this game as the loser would be eliminated, and both must pick themselves up after tough defeats to open the competition. Ecuador took the lead in the contest in the 22nd minute through a goal from Enner Valencia as he headed home a free kick. But Switzerland made the most of a set-piece chance of its own and equalized early in the second half courtesy of Admir Mehmedi. The match was there for the taking for either side in the second half, but just when Ecuador seemed to be pressing for the winner, Switzerland hit on a counter attack in the dying minutes to snatch the win on a well-worked piece of play that resulted in Seferovic slamming home the winner from close range. "It was an intense and evenly-matched game. Weve seen both teams perform to the best of their ability," said Ecuador head coach Reinaldo Rueda, "We seemed to have the game under control, but what use is that if you end up losing? But thats football, although we didnt deserve to lose. Both teams went looking for the win. We have to get this defeat out of our heads and get ready to face two very strong opponents." That first opponent, Honduras, was soundly beaten by France through two goals from Karim Benzema and an own goal that brought goal-line technology into play. Benzema converted from the penalty spot shortly before halftime to put France into the lead, while Honduras entered the break with 10 men after Palacios received a second yellow card. At that point it was mostly about damage control for head coach Luis Fernando Suarez and his team, although he watched France add another goal in the 48th minute when a shot from Benzema struck the post and was deflected into his own net by goalkeeper Noel Valladares. Benzema then capped the match with another tally 18 minutes from time, leaving Suarez to hope that his side can learn from the defeat and move forward. "It was a tough match, and they came through it better than we did," Suarez said. "Weve got no regrets; they were simply better than us on the day. There are certain aspects that well need to improve ahead of our next game. Its difficult to overcome a team thats already up by a goal and is capable of holding on to the ball so well. Well need to retain the lessons we learned today." Honduras is still searching for its first win at a World Cup, while Ecuador can give itself a chance at reaching the round of 16 for the second time with three points on Friday. Turner allowed two runs in his first start in six weeks and the Marlins knocked Mike Minor out of the game early in their 6-5 win over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night. Turner (3-6) made his return to the rotation after eight relief appearances and performed just as manager Mike Redmond hoped. Turner gave up four hits in five innings. "That was great," Redmond said. "We talked before the game about him stepping up and getting another opportunity to go into the rotation and he did exactly that." A key for Turner was the first inning, when he loaded the bases but allowed only one run. He ended the inning when Evan Gattis hit into a double play. "Being able to get out of that with just one run was huge," Turner said. The Braves only other run off Turner came on Justin Uptons third-inning homer. Donovan Solano had a career-high four hits and also reached on a walk as Miami took its second straight win over Atlanta to open the four-game series. Christian Yelich had two hits and scored three runs. Steve Cishek pitched around Chris Johnsons leadoff single in the ninth to earn his 23rd save. Pinch-runner Jordan Schafer was caught stealing before Cishek struck out Andrelton Simmons and pinch-hitter Ryan Doumit. Minor (3-6) was rocked in his shortest start of the season, giving up six runs on 10 hits and two walks in three-plus innings. Minor said he felt strong but "way rustier tonight." "And thats not an excuse, either," Minor said. "I felt good." Minor said he threw "pretty good" in the bullpen before the game. "Then I got out there and I just wasnt throwing to the corners," he said. "It was one of those games I felt like I was trying to aim the ball a little bit." Miami led 6-2 before its bullpen gave up three runs in the eighth, including Jason Heywards two-run single. Heyward drove in three runs with two hits. The Braves began the night one game behind first-place Washinngton in the NL East.dddddddddddd Turner made his first start since a loss at Texas on June 11. He struck out the side in the fourth as he earned his first win since June 5. "He gave us five innings," Redmond said. "We didnt want to push him too much considering hes been in the bullpen for a while." The Braves enjoyed a promising start off Turner. B.J. Upton led off the first with a double before Turner loaded the bases with two one-out walks. Heywards single to centre drove in Upton before Gattis hit into a double play to end the inning. Like Turner, Minor allowed only one run in the first inning after the Marlins loaded the bases with no outs. He gave up three runs in the third and was pulled after giving up three straight hits to open the fourth. The left-hander has allowed 10 or more hits seven times in five seasons, including five times this year. Giancarlo Stanton had a run-scoring double and Jeff Baker drove in a run with a single in the Marlins three-run third. Turner opened the fourth with a double off Minor and scored on Yelichs single. After Solanos double left runners on second and third, David Hale replaced Minor and gave up Marcel Ozunas run-scoring groundout for a 6-2 lead. Minors ERA rose to 5.32 as he allowed six runs for the second straight start. Following Uptons 18th homer with two outs in the third, the Braves didnt have another hit until Tommy La Stellas eight-inning single off Mike Dunn drove in Tyler Pastornicky, who walked as a pinch-hitter. Bryan Morris replaced Dunn and gave up Heywards two-run single, trimming Miamis lead to 6-5. Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman leaned over the rolled-up tarp to reach into the stands and catch Bakers foul popup in the ninth. NOTES: The Marlins lead the season series 6-5. ...
